Say No to Moss 3 Landfill is a grassroots citizens’ movement founded and spearheaded by Jennifer Chumbley, Brandi Hurley, and Amy Branson, alongside many passionate community members. This group formed in response to a proposal to build one of the largest privately owned landfills in the United States on the historic Moss 3 mining site—ground that holds deep significance as the site of the 1980s Pittston Coal Strike. Representing over 20,000 residents, with a group of 4,000 members, Say No to Moss 3 Landfill mobilized to protect their environment, health, and history from a landfill that would have brought 6,000 to 10,000 tons of trash daily from across the United States.
Through grassroots fundraising, awareness campaigns, and advocacy, the group raised funds for billboards, signs, and outreach materials to empower every citizen with knowledge of the project’s risks. Their efforts uncovered closed door meetings between local officials and developers, sparking a larger fight for transparency and accountability in local government. Say No to Moss 3 Landfill stands as a powerful example of ordinary people rising together to protect their land, history, and future.
