Doris Akers, Woman of the Year 2023

Doris Akers was born April 3, 1953, in Cherry Branch Snowville, Virginia. She has been married to Philip Akers for 22 years. She has one daughter Jamie and two sisters, Patsy and Sherry.

Doris worked ten years at the Radford Ammunition Plant before coming to Volvo in 1993, there she worked as an assembler on the Frame line, mounting fifth wheel, from there she became a Skilled Trades employee as an electrician. In 2016 she retired from Volvo but not from her Union.
Doris keeps active in the Community Action Program (CAP) when ever ask to phone bank or do labor walks doing the weekday and then on Saturday she is always there, she attends the AFL-CIO Convention as a Delegate. She is a member of the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) and Western Virginia Labor Federation.

Doris is the recording Secretary for UAW 2069 retiree committee and a member of the Carroll County Democratic party, with all that she does, she still makes time to take care of her 93-year-old mother.
