Julian Carper - Retired President, Virginia State AFL-CIO
Julian was boran in Middletown (Frederick County), Virginia and was educated in the public schools, graduating from Middletown High School in 1940. In 1942, he married Betty Lee Perry and they have one son, Gary, and two grandchildren, Emily and Jessica. Julia is a member of the Reliance United Methodist Church in Reliance, Virginia.
On November 19, 1940 hew was employed at America Viscose Corporation in Front Royal, Virginia as a production worker. He joined Local 371, Textile Workers Union of America and thus began his long and illustrious carerr in the labor movement.
Julian first serves as an "in plant" union representative and was later elected as a member of the Local Union Advisory Council. Subsequently, he was elected and served two years as President of Local 371.
On October 2, 1953, he received a call to get on the bus and come to Roanoke as there was a job for him to fill. He was asked to run for President. Although reluctant at first, Julian consented and ran, successfully beating the other candidate. The title, in the process, became Executive Vice President. Julian served on the Merger Committee whcih broguht about the formation of the irignia State AFL-CIO in 1956, becoming Vice President and State Legislative Representative. From 1956-1967, he was irginia State COPE Director.
In August, 1966, Julian became the Acting President of the Virginia AFL-CIO. In August 1967, he was elected by acclamation at the state convention to serve as President, remaining in that campacity until his retirement.
Durning his 30 Years as an officer of the Virginia State AFL-CIO, Julian served the working men and women of the State of Virginia well, from lobbying fro pro-worker legislation to serving on countless boards and commissions representing labor.He worked with people from every spectrum of society, earning their respect by always presenting himself in a gentlmanly manner, dealing with people in a calm, logical and honorable way. The best interests of working men and women have always been first and foremost in Julians's heart.
Brewster Snow - Retired Secretary-Treasurer, Virginia AFL-CIO
Brewster was born December 22, 1912 at Leesburg, VA and graduated from Natural Bridge High School in 1930.
He worked a variety of jobs in his trade as an electrician in home building, commercial and industrial construction and maintenance. His most memorable job was at Oak Ridge, Tennessee on the Manhattan atomic bomb project.
During World War II he served in the 289th Signal Company, 4th Engineers, Special Brigade in New Guinea, the Philippines an Japan. He was in Manila in August of 1945 when the bomb was dropped on Japan and was thankful that he work he had done at Oak Ridge had helped avert horrible bloodletting on the shores of Japan.
He joined Local 637, International Brotherhood of Electrial Workers in Roanoke in November 1942. He will have earned his fify-year membership card in November of this year.
He was appointed BusinessManager of IBEW Local 467 in Lynchburg in September 1950. He was then electedto that position which he held until May 1957 when he retired. He was designated Secretary-Treasurer Emeritus at that time.
Brewster currently resides with his wife at Natural Bridge Station.He has one daughter who is married and lives in Texas, two grandsons and two grandaughters, one of whom teaches school in Franklin County and lives in Roanoke.
