Man of the Year - Davis Murphy, Retired USW 1023

Davis

Davis Murphy has been a dedicated union representative who has been a member of the United Steelworkers for over 40 years! His journey began in the early 80’s when he was hired at what was then called Mohawk Rubber. He joined the Rubber Workers and started attending union meetings. The more he attended, the more he became interested in how the union worked to improve conditions, wages, and above all, safety for the workers.

Davis was inspired by the brotherhood formed by the men and women from diverse backgrounds, political affiliations, and viewpoints, who came together to work for a common cause. He decided at that time that he wanted to be a part of that ongoing process.

Over the years, Davis has held various positions within the plant as well as the union. He has served as Division Chairman, Union Vice-President and been actively involved on the Pension and Insurance Committee; the Human Rights Committee and the 401-K Committee.

His compassion for helping others didn’t just begin when he joined the union. As a native Roanoker, work ethic and community involvement have been a major focus for his life. In high school he served on the Junior Crew of the first responders, All-Volunteer Hunton Life Saving Crew. Then after high school he joined the Air Force and served as a medic (in pediatrics and the ER) in Texas and in Germany. Upon returning home from the Air Force, he re-joined the volunteer Hunton Life Saving Crew.

Davis retired in 2021 and discovered a new passion…golf!  He stated that he enjoys it not only because it’s great exercise, but he says, “he gets to meet some of the nicest and most interesting people”! Davis stated that when he isn’t golfing or riding his Harley, he’s usually traveling with the love of his life, his wife! His most cherished moments are spent with their five granddaughters, “who keep Meme and Pops jumping!”
