Woman of the Year - Alma Lee, AFGE 1739
Alma, a resident of the City of Roanoke, has been a federal government employee for 28 years. She started her V.A. career in Diatetic Service and then transferred to Nursing Service.
She attended Virginia Western Community College and Atlanta University. She is a widow with four children.
Alma has served the V.A. Medical Center's local branch of AFGE in the capacity of Steward, Vice-President and President.
On the District level, Alma was Vice-President of the Fourth District V.A. Council for three years, and Fair Practice Coordinator for the Fourth District for eiight years.
Alma is a member of the V.A. Salem's EEO Committee, a member of the Coalition of Labor Union Women, the NAACP, the Roanoke Chamber of Commerce and the Roanoke United Central Labor Council. She has also participated in the Roanoke Valley School's panel discussion on important local school issues.
Alma is the first woman elected to both the position of President of AFGE Local 1739, Salem, V.A. Medical Center and Presdient of the AFGE National VA Council.
She was recently named the Federal Woman of the Year at the Salem V.A. Medical Center. She was also honored by the Concerned Citizens for Jusitce for her excellent care of our veterans.
Ms. Lee has been appointed to the Virginia Commonwealth University Advisory Committee for Labor Studies and is active in the state COPE.
Alma is currently the President of the AFGE National Veterans Affairs Council, affiliated with the AFL-CIO, whcihc represnets 125,000 bargaining unit employees.
For her many contributions, the Western Virginia Chapter of CLUW recongnizes Alma Lee as the "Outstanding Labor Woman of the Year" for 1993.
